Like many people in North America now living in urbania, we are not too far removed in time or space from a rural environment. Our parents or grand-parents lived and worked virtually their entire lives on farms or acreages, and these places and associated social and environmental contexts were part of our growing up.

City life has its attractions, not the least of which is stable power and telecommunications! But there are many days when the thought of the slower-paced but fast-disappearing country lifestyle (or, more likely, our idealized perception of it) definitely has appeal.

These old wagons sit beneath a cluster of trees in the area of Ardrossan, Alberta. We had seen them many, many times over the years but something about them drew my eye on this afternoon in September, 2002.

Once undoubtedly heavily used equipment essential to someone's work in the nearby acreages or fields, these wagons now sit abandoned. Wind, moisture, temperature, oxidation and the passage of time have worked away on them until they seem like a familiar but weathering feature of the landscape.
