Churches of all kinds, whether modest and plain or magnificently towering, are something I am often drawn to photograph. Quite aside from my own religious upbringing, churches represent one of the most often seen, tangible manifestations of humanity's desire to embrace the divine and experience community with each other. As such they are a kind of architectural art form often full of both spiritual and social notes upon which to reflect.

The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a place I have visited a couple of times. Partly I'm drawn due to my long-standing fascination with aviation, especially of the military variety. But partly I also find a strong pull from the setting of the Academy, including its natural surroundings and the well known Cadet Chapel on the grounds, near the visitor's center. Most recently, we visited the Academy in November of 2002, when I took this picture of the Chapel. This time was in between the events of 9/11 and the war in Iraq, and made for particular reflection. The juxtaposition of a religious chapel with a military training facility no doubt strikes some people as ironic, others as nonsensical, and others yet as a perhaps necessary element of balance given the nature of humankind. Whatever one's thoughts, the graceful yet starkly edged framing of the USAFA Cadet Chapel likely does not fail to leave an impression.
