Alligators are primal and somewhat scary creatures that, as far as Deb is concerned, we do well enough not encountering in most places we normally go. Royce doesn't exactly want to pat one on the nose but thinks they have a certain fascination, kind of like having a living window into prehistoric time.

Resources where you can find out more:

We saw this American Alligator, one of a pair, meandering through the water hard by the edge of a bird observation platform at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. This was on March 13, 2004 during our first, brief trip to the NWR. The two 'gators were somewhat further out in the water when we first went onto the platform, but as seen in this shot they approached quite close in while we were out there.

An obvious conclusion is that people feed them, and they were looking for hand-outs from us. Even if we were foolish enough to make a habit of feeding wildlife in refuges, Deb was unnerved enough by the alligators' proximity to steer very clear. I was happy enough to simply hang over the edge of the rail, look this 'gator in the eye, and take its photo. Fortunately the pair moved off when no snacks were forthcoming from us and we didn't have to wonder any further whether we should abandon our viewing vantage.

This photo was taken hand-held with a Canon EOS 10D + EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens.
