The Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is a large member of the woodpecker clan, in fact the largest woodpecker in North America. (Or, depending on your age, it is a cartoon character with a crazy laugh.) This colorful but shy bird is a year-round inhabitant of the Calgary area, where we also live. Since it normally maintains a very large territory, we don't see many of them.

This character was spotted around 12:00 on January 12, 2003, in Fish Creek Provincial Park, Calgary, while Deb & Royce participated in a group walk with the Calgary Field Naturalists Society. We were near the head of the first trail off to the right of the information center at the Votier's Flats area. The bird was not actually too concerned about our observation, unlike the few Pileated Woodpeckers we have encountered before. We were within 7 meters of it for about 20 minutes or so while it hammered away at first one dead tree stump, then another. Photo info:
