The Mountain Chickadee (Poecile gambeli) is the only Chickadee with a distinct eyebrow. Otherwise in appearance, voice and behavior, it quite resembles its relatives such as the Black-capped Chickadee and Boreal Chickadee. This Chickadee prefers treed habitats at high elevations (not surprising, given its common name), but may come down lower in the winter. We get Mountain Chickadees in the southern Rockies of Alberta, but it is not a bird we often see. A glimpse of one is thus a welcome sight above and beyond the simple pleasure of watching these active, cheerful-seeming birds.

We encountered this Mountain Chickadee while in Bow Valley Provincial Park on a day trip, July 26, 2003. The bird was by itself, and we were a little surprised to see it at a relatively low elevation.

This is the same individual as in the previous photo -- one bedraggled Mountain Chickadee! Possibly it had just taken a bath somewhere nearby.
