The Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera) is a dabbling duck that is small in size but bold in color. They are present in wetlands areas of Alberta in the summer. Alberta is part of the northern-most extent of their range, which is much more restricted than is the case for cousins Blue-winged Teal or Green-winged Teal.

Cinnamon Teals don't tend to be numerous when encountered; usually we see only one or two at a time. According to the information in my Thayer birding software, the Cinnamon Teal and Ruddy Duck are the only two species of waterfowl to breed in both North and South America.

"Aren't I the handsome devil?"

Saturday May 31, 2003, it was a cloudy morning. I was out at a sloughy area in north-east Calgary searching for a Fulvous Whistling-Duck that had been reported the preceding week. I did find the Whistling-Duck, and also a number of other birds. This Cinnamon Teal was one of the other birds that the Whistling-Duck seemed to like to hang out with. Here, the Teal had wandered off from the Whistling-Duck, probably to get some peace and quiet for a few minutes. Later, a Northern Shoveler occupied the same spot.

This shot was taken with a digiscoping rig at a distance of about 70m. It's a bit fuzzy because I was still experimenting with setting the camera focus to infinity, and using only the scope focus ring to take the shot. Ultimately I decided this doesn't work the best, and now use macro focus on the camera.

I also now typically shoot in Aperture Priority mode at around f6, rather than full auto as was used for this shot. If the aperture had been locked down a little more, the shot would have been a bit sharper.

Streeeetch...

Here is another digiscoped shot of the Teal. The white underwing feathers are quite a contrast with the rich cinnamon color of the body feathers.
