Bio

I am a photographer specializing in landscapes. Being based in Calgary, Alberta gives me direct access to some amazing terrain, from the Canadian Rockies and prairies, to the northern Boreal forest and southern badlands. While I love to photograph around my own stomping grounds, I also enjoy traveling. In addition to pursuing my photography work, I am currently Executive Editor of NatureScapes.Net, a premier online resource for nature photographers. Along with my editing role at NSN, I write articles and contribute in the photography and discussion forums.

I also contribute photographs and articles to other publications on the web and in print. Some of my publication credits include the Calgary Herald newspaper, Photo Life magazine, Audubon’s American Birds, and Birder’s World. My images have been used by several conservation organizations, and I have been interviewed by CBC television and others on various nature and photography stories.

Some of my photographs are available for viewing at the following web sites:

Many of my images are available for license in digital form or as prints (unframed, framed or canvas) through my commercial galleries:

Image of the Month - August 2008

Summer Canola Field, Highway 2

My wife and I have friends and family in Edmonton, so we often make the 3 hour drive north for a weekend visit. In July, the canola fields are in full bloom, and on this particular trip I noted a location for a possible stop on the way home. A light breeze stirred the golden blooms under a deep blue sky as I photographed this quintessential view of the summer Alberta prairie.

News

July 2008: The official announcement has just been made -- the first ever NatureScapes.Net photography event will be held December 5 - 7, 2008. The event will combine presentations at the Macey Center in Socorro, New Mexico, as well as field photography outings to the world-famous Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I will be co-presenting at this event, on the topic of adding HDR to your digital workflow for landscape photography. Reknowned photographer and author Rick Sammon is our keynote presenter, and additional presentations and field outings will be delivered by NSN Publisher Greg Downing, and NSN Sr. Technical Editor E.J. Peiker.

This should be a fun event, combining learning, meeting other photographers, and having opportunities for great photography. Registration is open now. For information, please go to the Events section of NSN. Hope to see you there!

March 2008: My image "Godrevy Lighthouse" appears as the cover shot at NatureScapes.Net this month. This is one of my favorites of the past year, so I'm pleased to see it show-cased at NSN.

February 2008: I have just finished shooting for the third time in a workshop put on by Darwin Wiggett. We did some good winter photography in David Thompson Country, and also spent one day in the Jasper area. It was another great trip with lots of fantastic scenery, top work by Darwin to put us "in the right place at the right time", and excellent service at Aurum Lodge from hosts Madeleine and Alan Ernst. (Plus Alan is no slouch in the photography department either!) As before, I found the whole group interesting and fun to shoot with. These workshops are highly recommended, at any time of year. But be prepared because they are "field intensive"! New images will be showing up soon...

February 2008: Over at NatureScapes.Net, we have just published our February 2008 issue. The special topic this month is the announcement of the 2007 Image of the Year awards where we showcase a small group of outstanding images contributed by community members during the previous year.

January 2008: I have accepted the position of Executive Editor at NatureScapes.Net. I have been a member at NSN for several years, and prior to this new position was a forum moderator covering topics including digital photography and the landscape image gallery. I'm pleased to join the NSN management team, including Greg Downing, Juli Wilcox and E.J. Peiker. They and the other team members at NSN are a great bunch of people, and the site is a great community and resource. If you have an interest in nature photography I encourage you to drop by and take a look.

December 2007: I have been interviewed in Bill Lockhart's new blog. The ground covered includes HDR technique and other photographic topics. Check it out! And be sure to read some of the other great interviews while you're there...

September 2007: I have completed back-to-back photography trips in the Canadian Rockies. On the first trip, I was joined by UK photographer David Clapp. On the second, I attended Darwin Wiggett's Fall workshop. Both trips were a blast! I am still working up the images from both trips, but as they become available they are added to my PhotoShelter gallery, "Alberta Landscapes -- Fall 2007".
